Artist's Reception THIS SATURDAY from 4 to 6!
Don't forget to come to The Gilmore Gallery at The Peacham Library this Saturday, October 20th from 4 to 6PM. Susan McClellan will be there (along with snacks) for a reception to highlight her first solo exhibition of oil paintings, titled "Still Life & Bygone Life." The show will be up through November, but Saturday will be your big chance to meet the artist and learn more about her work.
Monday, October 8, 2012
For October and November, the Gilmore Gallery at The Peacham Library is proud to be the first to feature oil paintings by Peacham's own Susan McClellan. A long time publication designer (and currently art director for Vermont Life magazine), Susan brings a finally honed sense of color, proportion and texture to more than 20 canvases in this, her first solo exhibit. Susan's introduction is below:
Bygone Life – When my parents died four years ago, I ended up with some very old family albums. I'd seen the pictures countless times, but now the photographs were somehow more intriguing, as if they had something more to reveal. For me they had an appeal that contemporary snapshots do not – maybe because so few were taken in those days. Or perhaps I prefer the look of the early 20th century – the clothing, the cars, the landscape. And I like pondering what the people in these pictures would have thought, had they known that in the 21st century a great-great-grand-daughter or niece would be painting a picture, imagining the moment, bringing them partway to now.
Don't forget, if you'd like to purchase copies of any of our exhibit posters (or postcards, greeting cards, mugs, t-shirts, tote bags, etc.), you can go to our online store and shop to your heart's content, knowing that all of the profits will go to help fund the Peacham Library.

Artist's Reception this SUNDAY 4 to 6!!!
Don't forget to stop by the Gilmore Gallery in the Peacham Library this Sunday, July 15th from 4 to 6PM for the artist's reception with Hertha Forrai, our featured artist for June and July. Get a chance to see the exhibit and talk with Hertha about her approach to painting, her time spent learning from gallery namesake Helen Gilmore, or anything else this fascinating Peacham resident has to offer.
Thursday, May 31, 2012
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Hertha Forrai started her working life as an airplane parts buyer for Lufthansa. This brought her to New York in 1962, and soon thereafter to Seattle. She returned to New York in 1966, where she married Zoltan, a former Hungarian cavalry officer with a dream of opening a horseback riding school.
In 1968, Hertha and Zoltan came to Peacham and bought the old Field Farm on what is now called Great Road. They fixed it up board by board, and opened a riding school and children's riding camp there in 1974. At its peak, the school had 12 well-trained horses and an impressive reputation. After 20 years, Hertha and Zoltan retired in 1994, sold the farm and built a small house nearby.
Beginning in the late 1970's and for roughly a decade, Hertha took art lessons each winter from Helen Gilmore. Hertha credits Helen with teaching her how to "see," how to use color, and how to expand her creativity and self-expression.
Hertha works in traditional oil paints. Her subjects are varied, but her paintings are all meant to create the desire to be transported to a special time and place.
Limited edition exhibit poster prints and merchandise are available at cafepress.com/gilmoregallery with proceeds to help defray gallery costs.
Below are just a few of the paintings that will be featured in the show beginning June 1st.

David Smith Oil Painting Exhibit Is Up!
Here are some low resolution shots of what we've just put up in the Gilmore Gallery -- they certainly don't do justice to the beauty of these paintings, so you should really get down here to see them for yourself. But in the meantime, enjoy:
And don't forget, we have limited edition prints, cards, tote bags and mugs available in our CafePress store. Proceeds go to help defray the gallery expenses -- hopefully we'll have enough to buy some refreshments for the reception on April 22nd! Click here to go to the store.

Paintings of Robert Van Vranken
The Peacham Library’s Gilmore Gallery exhibition for February and March is Robert Van Vranken, a highly accomplished visual artist, and a recent transplant to Peacham from Brunswick, Maine. Mr. Van Vranken’s work has been featured in well known New York galleries for well over 20 years. He has participated in no less than 16 solo shows and over 30 group exhibitions in galleries from Seattle to Maine, and has taught at Princeton, the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of Maine.
The centerpiece of the Robert Van Vranken exhibit at Gilmore Gallery is an impressive 47″ x 82″ oil painting that highlights Mr. Van Vranken’s painstaking attention to detail and technical skill, along with his extensive knowledge of light and shadow. It and several smaller pieces will be on display until the end of March.
